The History of the Medical Brigades

The first medical brigades provided basic evaluation and treatment services for patients at the clinic in Urraco Pueblo, Yoro, Honduras.  The clinic's official name is La Clinica Suyapa.  Early visits demonstrated a broad need for vitamins and anti-parasitics.  We were able to get these in the states from samples donated by hospitals or physician offices.  The root problem was also addressed by providing clean water to several locations.

More complicated patients were also seen.  Many had chronic conditions or deformities or infections secondary to trauma.  We also saw a tremendous need for dental care.  We soon added dental teams providing basic services including dental extractions.

Then the need for vision care became clear and subteams for eye care were also formed.

More recently highly specialized orthopedic teams have spun off and formed unique diagnostic and surgical teams focusing on pediatrics.

THE NEED FOR HOUSING

The need for basic housing is a fundamental focus of our friends in Honduras.  Benigno Ramirez, the founder of ProPapa Missions Honduras (PPMH), was abandoned on the streets of San Pedro Sula at age 5.  His story is fascinating, filled with both joy and sorrow, but he knew and lived without a home for many years.  He is now committed to providing shelter for those in need.

I had the opportunity to build homes in the Urraco region.  Children would toss a worn T-shirt over their shoulder and help carry blocks to build the homes.  We have built homes for single mothers taking care of handicapped children, families that have lost their homes and those cast out from plantation housing.  The reward of actively participating in fundamentally improving the lives of our Honduran friends is challenging to quantify.

The houses are simple, but their value as homes  provides a lifetime of reward for those who participate in the construction process.

THE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The ProPapa Scholarship Program provides the basic cost for a student to attend school.  Although there is no fee to attend public school, the families re responsible for the providing a uniform and basic school supplies.

The Scholarship Program provides a uniform (shirt, pants/skirt, and shoes), backpack, books and basic school supplies.

The cost to sponsor a grade school student for one year is $50; for a junior or senior high student the cost is $150; for a technical school (carpentry, soldering, beauty school) the cost is $200.

The school year runs from February to November.  The Sponsors receive a letter and a photo from the student they sponsor once a year.

he Scholarship Program began in 1999 with 26 students.  We now have over 300 students in the Program each year.  To date there have been 1410 students that have been enrolled in the Scholarship Program!

Thanks to all the Sponsors over the years who make this possible.
